Prof. Vladimir Shalaev has been named a 2012 recipient of the UNESCO Medal

Distinguished Purdue University professor Vladimir Shalaev has been named a 2012 recipient of the UNESCO Medal for the Development of Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies. Shalaev, the Bob and Anne Burnett Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was cited for his research in the field of metamaterials optics and nano-optics. Shalaev also is the scientific director of nanophotonics for Purdue at Discovery Park's Birck Nanotechnology Center, and a professor of biomedical engineering and physics. The UNESCO medal was established at the initiative of the International Commission responsible for developing the "Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems" (EOLSS) theme on nanoscience and nanotechnologies, with support from the Permanent Delegation of the Russian Federation to UNESCO
