The  purpose  of  this  symposium  is  to  bring  together  leading  educators  and  researchers  from  university,  government,  and  industry  around  the  world  to  promote  the  various  exciting  fields  of  micro/  nanotechnology.  Representatives  of  university  micro/nano  fabrication  facilities,  ranging  from  new  start-up  labs  to  nationally  recognized  facilities,  have  found  this  symposium  an  excellent  forum  for  exchanging  information  and  presenting  new  research  and  educational  concepts.  Government  agencies  such  as  NSF,  NIH,  NIST,  SEMATECH,  SRC,  DoD  and  ONR  regularly  participate  with  research  papers  and  updates  on  funding  opportunities.  Industry  interactions  with  universities,  including  technology  transfer,  collaborative  research,  and  training  efforts  are frequently presented.

All topics involving the operations management of fabrication facilities and laboratories will be considered.  A few 
topics below have been cited as being of particular interest, but the author should not be constrained by the topics 
on this list. 

Recharge Models    

  • What type of recharge model do you 
    use to operate your facility?  
  • What are the benefits/drawbacks to your 
    current recharge model?  
  • Do you charge overhead to outside users 
    of the facility? 

Facility Cap for Charging Users  

  • How did you determine your cap? 
  • Do you have a process to review the 
    effectiveness of your cap?  
  • What are the benefits/drawbacks of 
    implementing the cap?      

Depreciation of Facility & Equipment  

  • Depreciation mechanism  
  • Recovering depreciation  
  • Determining useful life of 
    facility & equipment  

Income Streams & Subsidies  

  • How do you promote the use of your facility to 
    outside users?  
  • Do you have a separate rate structure for your 
    outside users?  
  • Who funds your subsidy?  
  • Are federal funds received to help offset the fees 
    for your users?   

 Start-up Companies  

  • Is there a separate fee structure for start-up 
    companies?  
  • How do you determine what qualifies as a 
    start-up?  
  • What is your process to recruit start-up companies 
    to utilize your facility?      

Equipment Funding  

  • How do you handle the purchases of equipment 
    needed for the facility?
