Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation - Indiana

Purdue University - North Central

Program Description

In an effort to recruit and retain low-income, at-risk, and underrepresented students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields of research, the LSAMP at Purdue- North Central is designed to accomplish the following goals:

  • Recruit and support the participation of LSAMP students
  • Connect each student to a faculty mentor who will support and advise the student in their STEM field of interest.  Each faculty mentor will
  1. Engage students in on-going research projects
  2. Prepare students to attend or present their research at a minimum of one scientific conference or meeting a year
  3. Support summer research opportunities at PNC for second and third year participating students
  • Connect students with peer mentors and tutors in STEM fields
  • Encourage and support student pursuit and completion of four year degrees in a STEM field at PNC (presently biology)
  • Encourage and support the bridging of student from two-year STEM areas of concentration (chemistry, mathematics, physics, or statistics) at PNC into the pursuit and completion of four year and/or graduate degrees in STEM fields at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN).

Summer Research Opportunities
First, second, and third year students will have the opportunity to complete a paid eight-week summer internship with their faculty mentor.  Students will work up to 20 hours a week to continue their research during the summer. At the end of the eight weeks, students will present their summer research to a small group of faculty and peers.
