Purdue Conference for Pre-Tenure Women

Women in higher education from Purdue and other national institutions are invited to attend Purdue’s first Conference for Pre-Tenure Women this fall.

The conference, designed for postdoctoral and pre-tenure women -- especially those in science, technology, engineering, and math -- will take place from 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, until 4 p.m. the following day.

The conference is co-sponsored by, the Butler Center for Leadership Excellence and the Women's Resource Office in conjunction with the Black Cultural Center, Latino Cultural Center and Native American Educational and Cultural Center as part of the ADVANCE grant funded by the National Science Foundation. The Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Office of the Provost, Purdue Women Lead and Diversity Resource Office are also co-sponsors of the conference.

Providing educational opportunities to support women and identifying strategies to enhance their success for promotion and tenure will be the focus of the two-day event. Purdue hopes to make this an annual conference. Featured speakers will be:

  • Mildred Garcia, president of California State University, Dominguez Hills, and author of "Succeeding in an Academic Career."
  • Lesia Crumpton-Young, professor of industrial engineering and management systems at the University of Central Florida. She is the author of the You’ve Got the Power workbook series and the recipient of the 2006 Women of Color Educational Leadership Award and the 1999 Educator of the Year Award from the National Society of Black Engineers.
  • Gertrude Fraser, vice provost for Faculty Advancement at the University of Virginia, and Kathleen Wong, assistant professor in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. They will lead a workshop on Mobilizing Women’s Inclusive Leadership Skills. Their work is a part of the Association of American Colleges and Universities Campus Women Lead program.
  • Former Purdue trustee Susan Butler will lead a workshop based on her first book, "Becoming the CEO of You.

A $150 registration fee is required to attend the conference. However, attendees may apply for fellowships that will cover the cost of the conference fee and a one-night stay at Purdue’s Union Club Hotel. Fellowships will be awarded to 20 applicants. The application deadline is Aug. 1.
