i-GSDI will reach out and establish lasting partnerships and affiliations with defense related organizations outside of Purdue that will include the Sandia Strategic Alliance, Purdue Research Foundation, the Indiana Applied Research Institute (currently forming), Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), etc.

Sandia National Labs Strategic Alliance with Purdue

Purdue is among a small group of research universities that has entered into a strategic alliance with Sandia Labs, one of the nation’s premier research institutions.

Sandia National Laboratories signed a memorandum of understanding with Purdue University to establish the alliance on April 16, 2015.

The goals of the alliance are to solve significant problems and accelerate technology adoption while offering new challenges and opportunities for researchers, faculty and students at both Purdue and Sandia.

The alliance provides opportunities for:

  • Collaboration on research challenges;
  • Increased faculty research partnerships with Sandia;
  • Exchange opportunities for Purdue faculty and students and Sandia staff.

Sandia is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corp., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. With main facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Livermore, California, Sandia has major research and development responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness.

Dr. Bill Hart, a Sandia manager, was on campus for two years (2015-2017) as the inaugural Sandia liaison for Purdue and he worked with the i-GSDI to establish many significant connections and collaborations. Sandia is in the process of selecting a new Sandian to be the Purdue liaison.

Purdue and the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane Division (NSWC Crane) have often collaborated in a somewhat informal manner with research projects and student interactions. In the last two years, a larger and more strategic relationship between Crane and Purdue has been developing across both the Purdue University research enterprise and the commercialization efforts of the Purdue Research Foundation. Frequent leadership meetings and technical interchange meetings have now born fruit. For example, the recently announced Purdue-PRF-Westgate initiative and two Cooperative Research Agreements between Purdue research teams and Crane exemplify these important strategic developments. The i-GSDI is taking the lead to nurture and grow these engagements in partnership with all Purdue assets, PRF, and other partners (such as the emerging Applied Research Institute).
