Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security
The U.S. Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security is an annual 2-week long learning program for graduate students attending U.S. institutions who are interested in developing a holistic understanding of the conceptual challenges around global food security. This introduction to global food security provides students with a working knowledge of these issues, with a focus on cross-disciplinary problem solving of real-world development challenges. The 2016 Summer Institute will be held June 5-18, on Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The team of instructors (from Purdue and other institutions) includes faculty, practitioners, and policy makers who have expertise across key disciplines in the natural, social, and health sciences and engineering; on-the-ground development experience; and experience with integrated approaches to problem solving. The program includes lectures, case studies, small group discussions, and near-by field trips.
Application materials include an application form, a brief narrative (not to exceed one page) describing your interest in global food security, and a letter of recommendation from your research advisor. The application deadline for the 2016 Summer Institute is Monday, February 1, 2016, 5:00 pm Eastern time. [application no longer available]
Applicants will be notified of their acceptance beginning March 7, 2016.
Enrollment is limited to 40 students. Lodging, meals, and teaching materials are provided to admitted students at no cost. Students are responsible for their travel to and from the Purdue West Lafayette campus. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of graduate study and be enrolled in a U.S. institution at the time of application. U.S. citizenship is not required. U.S. citizens and students from Feed the Future focus countries (www.feedthefuture.gov) are particularly encouraged to submit applications.
Upon successful completion of the Summer Institute on Global Food Security, qualifying participants are encouraged to apply for a graduate research fellowship grant from the U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security program.
