Summer Institute on Global Food Security
The U.S. Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security is a 2-week long learning program for graduate students attending U.S. institutions who are interested in developing a holistic understanding of the conceptual challenges around global food security. This introduction to global food security will provide students with a working knowledge of these issues with a focus on cross-disciplinary problem solving of real-world development challenges. The 2014 U.S. Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security will be held Sunday, June 8 - Friday, June 20, 2014.
The team of instructors (from Purdue and other institutions) includes faculty, practitioners, and policy makers who have expertise across key disciplines in the natural, social, and health sciences and engineering; on-the-ground development experience; and experience with integrated approaches to problem solving. The program will include lectures, case studies, small group discussions, and near-by field trips.
Application materials include an application form, a brief narrative (not to exceed one page) describing your interest in global food security, and a letter of recommendation from your research advisor. The application deadline for the Summer 2014 institute is Monday, March 10, 2014 at 5:00pm Eastern time. Applications are currently being accepted.
Enrollment will be limited to 30 students. Lodging, meals, and teaching materials will be provided to admitted students at no cost. Students are responsible for their travel to and from the Purdue West Lafayette campus. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of graduate study and be enrolled in a U.S. institution at the time of application. U.S. citizenship is not required.
Upon successful completion of the Summer Institute on Global Food Security, qualifying participants are encouraged to apply for a graduate research fellowship grant from the U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security program.
