LDM brings together the data, current research, analyses, mapping tools, and models to assist communities throughout the planning process. The Hoosier economy and quality of life are dependent on the green infrastructure that provides the base necessary to support agriculture and natural resources-based business, environmental services need to support quality of life, recreational opportunities, and tourism.LDM is assisting local decision makers around the state of Indiana. LDM is sponsored by Center for the Environment.
Living Labs on the Wabash (LLOW)
Creating Clear Vision in Our River Community
A unique and ambitious Center project known as Living Labs On the Wabash (LLOW) integrates discovery, learning, and outreach and acts as a model for river communities in Indiana and elsewhere. The immediate focus includes urban riverfront revitalization with an eye to the ecology of the Wabash River and its floodplain. Affiliated with the project are Lafayette and West Lafayette mayors, Tippecanoe County Commissioners, and representatives from three park boards. Forums and surveys with hundreds of local residents have shown commonalities in people's visions for the future of the Wabash corridor, and resulted in focusing LLOW efforts on the health of the river.
Alaskan Community
Project Objective: Measure the threat to Human health by frequent floods
Frequent flooding and rising sea levels are a principle threat to Hooper Bay. With this project the Native Village of Paimiut addresses health and safety concerns raised by the floods. They hoped to recover data for use as a foundation for making health, safety, and infrastructure decisions for the village. A flood Risk Map will be developed to assist them in identifying current threats to human habitation, subsistence food resources, potable water supplies, etc. The map would also help improve village planning efforts for future expansion and when new threats are encountered from storm events.
