State Utility Forecasting Group (SUFG)

Director's Welcome

Welcome to the State Utility Forecasting Group (SUFG) website. SUFG has been assisting the State of Indiana for over 20 years through its forecasts of electricity consumption, prices, and resource requirements. SUFG also performs analyses of a number of issues facing the energy industries. Feel free to browse through the SUFG publications and presentations; a number of them are available for free download here. Also, please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

2010 Indiana Renewable Energy Resources Study - click here to download

This report represents the eighth annual study of renewable resources in Indiana performed by the State Utility Forecasting Group. It was prepared to fulfill SUFG’s obligation under Indiana Code 8-1-8.8 (added in 2002) to “conduct an annual study on the use, availability, and economics of using renewable energy resources in Indiana.”

This report represents the twelfth set of statewide electricity projections produced by SUFG. These projections include forecasts of electricity usage, prices, and resource needs for a 20-year period.

In February 2008, SUFG and the Purdue Climate Change Research Center (PCCRC) released "The Projected Impacts of Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction Legislation on Electricity Prices in Indiana"

The report is a collaborative effort between SUFG and PCCRC to determine the expected effect of climate change legislation on Indiana's electricity industry.

Future Activities

  • SUFG will continue its efforts to improve its natural gas modeling system.  Specific focus areas will include updating the natural gas database, incorporating local syngas supply, and refining the level of detail in the region surrounding Indiana.

  • SUFG is in the process of developing a generation portfolio risk management model that determines the appropriate mix of generation to meet load requirements while minimizing the expected cost of electricity with the risk of higher cost due to such factors as price volatility and environmental restrictions.  Further work includes incorporating additional sources of electricity such as wind and different technologies within fuel sources (such as IGCC vs. pulverized coal).

  • Recent developments in electricity markets have led to a general lowering of utility reserve margins.  SUFG will use loss of load expectation analysis techniques to develop a more refined estimate of the appropriate level of reserves on a statewide basis.
