Counselors-Volunteers

Counselors

Student counselors

Counselors for our program will include Purdue junior/senior-undergraduate and graduate students who are studying STEM related disciplines. Counseling in this program is stimulating, challenging and rewarding, and provides a unique opportunity to gain experience learning about energy, interacting with the high school students as well as teachers. The live-in setting also provides a rich environment for developing interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and exploring self-growth.

Shifts/Time commitment

Day and night shifts are available. Day shift runs from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and the night shift is from 5:00 pm to 8:00 am. Free room and board is also provided.

All counseling positions/responsibilities begin with weekly planning/training sessions from late March, 2018. These sessions are designed to make counselors more familiar and engaged with the program. They are usually 1-2 hours long and are scheduled for after class hours.

Duties/expectations

During their shifts, counselors are expected to participate in all activities in-town and out-of-town during the one week program. Counselor duties begin with student check-in by 12 noon on June 17 and ends only when the last student in their counseling group leaves for home, around 2:00 pm, on the final Saturday (June 23). Please download the comprehensive list of counselor duties and expectations here: Counselor Duties and Expectations.

Salary

Counselors will be paid a base salary of $650 for their services during the week of the academy. Additionally, hours spent in planning/training sessions and other activities relating to the academy (e.g. helping to design hands-on activities, projects) will be compensated at $10/hr.
