Power and Energy Course

Maintaining technical superiority for the future fleet is a critical need that is contingent on a pipeline of leaders in science and technology. The Navy and all of the Department of Defense (DoD) is facing a retirement crisis that will impact its capacity for research domain expertise. Over the last 8 years the average age of a member of the Navy workforce has increased 5 years and this impacts the need for the best and brightest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Purdue proposes to build, deliver, evaluate and sustain a Navy-focused program in Power and Energy for senior undergraduate and graduate students at Purdue University. The proposed new course follows the path of several new course efforts in power and energy that have been developed over the past 5-6 years, we will migrate the program to an online platform with national reach and provide a sustainable pathway to expand to the research domains of the other 8 areas of strategic focus specified in the Naval S & T strategic plan (2015). This proposed course can serve as an intern-like opportunity for Purdue students to become more familiar with the Navy, research needs and missions. The program is funded ($600,000/3 years) by the Office of Naval Research.
