Biography

Dr. John W. Sutherland is Professor and Head of the Division of Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in industrial engineering and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign UIUC. His research and teaching interests are focused on design and manufacturing for sustainability. He has mentored over 70 graduate students, including 20 PhD students, to the completion of their degrees. His record of scholarship includes approximately 250 papers that have been published in various journals and conference proceedings. His honors include the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award 1992, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers 1996, SAE Teetor Award 1999, and SME Education Award 2009. He is a Fellow of SME and ASME.  

Expertise: Design and Manufacturing for Sustainability. This includes Process Improvement reduced cutting fluid usage in machining, air quality in manufacturing environments, reduced manufacturing energy, remanufacturing, Product Design value across the product life cycle embodied energy content in products, System Issues logistics, supply chains, decision-making support, societal sustainability.
