Coal, Steel, and the Industrial Economy: A Briefing, December 11-12, 2008

U.S. produced coal supplies 49% of the basic energy needs for the nation's total electricity demand, providing secure, sustainable, and cheap supplies for the U.S. economy. In Indiana coal supplies 95% of the energy needs to fuel the state's electric power generators. Without coal the economy of the nation and state would collapse. As we look towards diversifying power generation technologies and the sources of basic energy supplies the dependence on coal will be staying with us for many decades yet to come, until alternative, appropriate, safe designs are operational. How to promote therefore the use of clean coal technologies in coming years is of importance to us all and this was the reason for the December 11-12 Coal Briefing at Purdue Calumet, to face up to and address this challenge, so maintaining and strengthening America's industrial economy.

  4. "Clean Coal and Co-Production Potential," Tom Lynch, Chief Engineer - Gasification, ConocoPhillips

  5. "OSD Clean Fuel Initiative and the Air Force," Theodore K. Barna, Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Advanced Systems and Concepts

The CCTR Launching Workshop, August 18, 2004

The first workshop took place August 18, 2004, in Indianapolis. The objective of this workshop was to have an open platform discussion, among all coal stakeholders form around the state (government departments, public interest groups, companies, academia institutions) to obtain a consensus on the priorities in developing new technologies that can use Indiana coal in an environmentally and economically sound manner. Resulting from the break-out considered most beneficial to Indiana. In the opening session of the workshop two commissioned background papers were presented, one by the Indiana Geological Survey and another by the CCTR. These two papers ("Characterization of Indiana's Coal Resource...", and "Expanding The Utilization of Indiana Coals") are available below:

  1. "Expanding the Utilization of Indiana Coals"
  2. "Characterization of Indiana's Coal Resource: Availability of the Resources, Physical and Chemical Properties of the Coal, and the Present and Potential Uses"
