Biography

Paul’s research focuses on the chemistry and dynamics of various atmospheric species in the Earth’s troposphere. Specific research areas include 1) climate change and air-surface interactions in the Arctic, 2) measurements of CO2 and nitrogen fluxes in North American forests, 3) tropospheric ozone chemistry, and 4) biosphere-atmosphere interactions. Paul’s group is also interested in analytical methods development for atmospheric measurements. This research includes work to develop the capability to conduct measurements of fluxes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from a light aircraft, the Airborne Laboratory for Atmospheric Research (ALAR). The team is building the aircraft-experiment interface, determining flight performance parameters for the airborne experiment, conducting flight testing and calibration of the modified aircraft, and providing operational engineering support. His most recent work centers on the Ocean-Atmosphere-Sea Ice-Snowpack (OASIS) project where an international team is studying photochemical reaction impacts on the chemistry and composition of the overlying atmosphere of the Arctic snowpack environments. The team will study the phenomena of Arctic haze, and ozone and mercury depletion in the Arctic Ocean region in the spring time, and how these will change as global climate changes.
