Symposium to highlight Purdue's regional, international role in analytical instrumentation
A daylong symposium focused on Purdue University's growing regional and international role in analytical instrumentation is planned Wednesday, June 18, at Discovery Park's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship.
C.N.R. Rao, renowned chemistry professor and researcher and
chairman of the Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister in India,
is the keynote speaker and will give a presentation as part of the
College of Science Centennial Lecture series.
Rao, who received
his doctorate in philosophy from Purdue in 1958, will give a talk on the
chemistry of nanomaterials from 11 a.m. to noon in Burton Morgan, Room
121. Rao is the Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President
of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in
Bangalore.
A panel discussion from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. will include
leading government, industrial and academic leaders in analytical
chemistry and instrumentation.
During the morning session,
faculty researchers Paul Bohn of Notre Dame University, Rashid Bashir of
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Stephen Jacobson of
Indiana University will give presentations that highlight the strengths
of analytical instrumentation in the region.
Organizers are R.
Graham Cooks, the Henry Bohn Hass Distinguished Professor of Chemistry;
Fred Regnier, John H. Law Distinguished Professor of Chemistry; and
Pankaj Sharma, associate director and head of Discovery Park's
international program.
Later that day, Rao will give a lecture at
3:30 p.m. in the Lawson Computer Science Building, Room 1142, in
conjunction with a Discovery Lecture Series event on science, policy and
research funding opportunities and challenges between the United States
and India.
Analytical chemistry and its instruments provide
measurements and quantitative information underlying much of the
research and commercial activity in chemistry, biology and medicine.
The
symposium is free and open to the public, but registration will be
required for those who attend the luncheon. For more information, go to http://www.purdue.edu/dp/caid/.
