Benefits to Faculty and Students
The following list of research related activities represents a fraction of the academic and federal sustainable manufacturing activity and is not intended to be comprehensive or exclude any particular research program, center, or other effort.

The NIST Manufacturing Extension Laboratory is conducting ongoing investigations in the areas of Sustainable and Lifecycle Information-based Manufacturing. This program has three objectives:
- Objective 1: Establish standards requirements for sustainable manufacturing
- Objective 2: Provide formal models of product and process information
- Objective 3: Develop validation, simulation and testing methodologies for information models and standards
Additional information, including current collaborators can be found on the NIST MEL site.

The Indiana Database for University Research Expertise (INDURE), an Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) project, provides manufacturers with an easily accessible means of identifying specific Indiana-based faculty expertise, including sustainable manufacturing faculty expertise (502 faculty).

Rochester Institute of Technology's Galisano Institute for Sustainability, led by Director Nabil Nasr, consists of six different research centers/institutes:
- National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery (NC3R)
- Center for Sustainable Production (CSP)
- Center for Sustainable Mobility (CSM)
- Systems Modernization and Sustainment Center (SMS)
- New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I)
- NanoPower Research Labs (NPRL)

The University of California Berkeley's Laboratory for Manufacturing and Sustainability (LMAS), led by Director David Dornfeld, is concerned with the analysis and improvement of manufacturing processes and the development of tools to analyze sustainability. There are currently three main groups with LMAS:
- Green Manufacturing
- Precision Manufacturing
- Consortium on Deburring and Edge Finishing (CODEF) & Cleanability

The University of Cambridge's Institute for Manufacturing, conducts research in a broad range of manufacturing-related areas. The Sustainable Manufacturing Group conducts research in metals, paper, and polymers, as well as supply chain related efforts. Julian M.Allwood, Søren E Laursen, Cecilia M de Rodriguez, and Nancy M P Bocken have authored "Well Dressed? The present and future sustainability of clothing and textiles in the UK."
