Bone Health

Fractures of the hip are relatively common in elderly adults and often lead to devastating consequences. The rate of hip fracture is two to three times greater in women than men. Health care costs for hip fracture have risen to $17 billion per year. The Department of Nutrition Sciences at Purdue has had a strong presence in calcium nutrition and bone health since the mid 1980s. Expertise includes vitamin D and relationships to health that extend beyond bone to cancer, hypertension, body fat, and diabetes. Topics related to calcium and Vitamin D are two of the most funded nutrition areas because of their broad relationship to health and the prevalence of deficiencies in the U.S. and around the world.
