The Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) is one of the core centers in Purdue’s Discovery Park, a network of academic interdisciplinary research centers that address societal scale challenges through the integration of discovery and delivery. The BNC, with 45 resident faculty and 220 graduate students from twelve disciplines, is housed in a building that includes the 25,000 sq. ft. Scifres Nanofabrication Lab (a Class 1-10-100 cleanroom along with an integrated bio-pharma cleanroom) and 22,000 sq.ft. of specialized laboratory space for nanometrology, materials characterization, nanochemistry, biomedicine, device characterization, and materials synthesis.

The responsibilities of the Managing Director include:

  • Enhancing the research portfolio of the BNC through partnerships with industry and other sectors. 
  • Identifying opportunities, developing strategies and working with faculty in the writing of research proposals. 
  • Planning and managing budgets of research support grants and gifts. 
  • Documenting the Center’s achievements and progress through benchmarking and tracking of metrics. 
  • Planning and implementing the outreach activities of the Center, engaging the public, governmental agencies and other academic institutions to expand the impact of the Center’s discovery and commercialization activities.

Requirements:

  • Masters degree in engineering, science or similar technical field.
  • Five years of academic research experience
  • Experience with outreach and/or program development
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to work with academic researchers including graduate students and industrial/corporate partners.
  • Knowledge of the grant proposal process and external funding sources

A PhD in a science or engineering field is preferred.  An MBA in addition to an MS or PhD is desirable.  Prior experience in commercialization is also desirable.
