Beginning in 2006-07, a National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award. The total aid package, including National SMART Grant, cannot exceed financial need.

Eligibility Criteria: U.S. Citizen; Federal Pell Grant eligible; full-time course load with at least one class specifically required for this major program of study (excluding all electives and general education classes); in 3rd academic year (60-89 successfully completed credit hours) or in 4th academic year (90-approximately 120 successfully completed credit hours depending on degree program) towards program of study; major in physical, life or computer science, engineering, mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language (as determined by the Department of Education); and have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA in the coursework required for student's major.

Application Deadline: Plan to apply at least eight weeks before start of classes.
