Financial Aid Policies and Procedures

APPEAL PROCEDURES

You may discuss a review of your financial aid with a financial aid counselor. He or she will review your situation and counsel you on any necessary steps concerning possible appeal procedures.

DEPENDENCY STATUS

Students and parents may not always understand the concept of dependency status for financial aid purposes. This information provides clarification of current federal aid policy regarding dependency status, and provides information for students who may be getting married.

DRUG CONVICTION IMPACT ON FINANCIAL AID

A conviction for any offense involving the possession or sale of illegal drugs during a period of enrollment for which you receive Title IV federal student aid may result in the loss of future financial aid eligibility. If you are convicted of possessing or selling drugs after you submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you must notify the Division of Financial Aid immediately. For more information visit www.purdue.edu/dfa/all/drugconviction.php

FINANCIAL AID CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS

For federal, state of Indiana, and Purdue need-based aid eligibility, a student must be a U.S. citizen or "eligible" non-citizen. Check out this section for more information about determining citizenship status for financial aid purposes.

HOW AID IS PAID TO STUDENTS

Disbursement of financial aid funds is handled by the Bursar's Office. Before taking any action to disburse financial aid funds, the Bursar's Office must receive disbursement authorization from the Division of Financial Aid (DFA).

INITIAL COURSE PARTICIPATION

The University is required by the U.S. Department of Education to ensure student financial aid recipients have commenced initial course participation to be eligible for financial aid.

MILITARY ACTIVATION INFORMATION

For those students who are called to active duty while enrolled in the University, here is some additional military activation information.

MISCELLANEOUS

This section deals with miscellaneous financial aid policies such as encumbrances, overawards, verification of data, and defaulting on loans.

MONEY FOR BOOKS, SUPPLIES, AND OFF-CAMPUS LIVING EXPENSES

The Division of Financial Aid estimates your books, supplies, and off-campus living expenses (room and board) budget in an estimated cost of attendance. This section provides information on this process.

REFUNDS/WITHDRAWALS

Refunds of tuition and fees will only be issued if certain circumstances apply, and are handled by the Bursar's Office. Withdrawal from the University may result in a refund or a bill for repaying financial aid that was disbursed.

REPEAT COURSEWORK

Changes in federal regulations impact how financial aid can be used for classes taken more than once. A repeated course is eligible for financial aid if it has never been completed with a grade of D- or higher (passed).

REQUIRED ENROLLMENT FOR FINANCIAL AID

Eligibility for Federal and state of Indiana student aid for semester at Purdue University will be based on the number of credit hours in which a student is enrolled as of the end of the fourth week of classes in the fall and spring terms and at the end of second week of classes in summer modules.
