In 2006-07, 1,273 Purdue students participated in study abroad, 64% of whom participated in Purdue faculty-led programs. The number of Purdue students studying abroad has more than tripled since 2000. The number of programs utilized by Purdue Students has grown to 185, therefore doubling in number since 2000.
Policies in place reflect the Purdue philosophy that study abroad should be open to everyone. The office strives to send as many students as possible overseas in the belief that spending time in another country can be life-enriching, can add something unique to one's academic experiences, and can enhance one's career potential.
The University offers both short-term and long-term study abroad programs, with some as short as one week and others as long as an academic year. Some programs are designed for students in very specific fields of study, while others have a more general appeal; students in nearly every major have multiple options for studying overseas. Participants earn Purdue credits while on study abroad, so taking part should not delay students' graduation.
Each program has a different fee, and some are not much different from the cost of studying at West Lafayette (except for the cost of a plane ticket). Every effort is made to keep program costs as low as possible. Most of the same financial aid that covers Purdue expenses can be applied to study abroad, and in recent years, more financial aid has become available.
The Office of Programs for Study Abroad and the Office of International Programs are working with departments and colleges on an ongoing basis to develop new programs and provide an increasing number of international opportunities for Purdue students and faculty. See www.studyabroad.purdue.edu.
