Defined as groups of first-year students who (1) take two or three courses together or (2) share a common academic interest and live in the same residence hall or (3) both.
New Purdue Students includes transfers and new beginners.
Transfer students were invited to Boiler Gold Rush for the first time in 2008. A total of 129 transfers participated (10.2% of the Transfer Class). This number reflects only the number of first-year students participating in BGR. A total of 5,365 students partcipated in BGR, representing 64.6% of all new Purdue students in Fall 2008.
Total Participation is based on the filled spaces associated with Learning Community offerings. In some cases, students take part in more than one Learning Community. When calculating the percent of the first-year class involved, the number of unique students is used as opposed to the total participation number.
Residential Learning Communities include a residential component in addition to or in lieu of course clusters. Examples include the Earhart Residential Communities associated with the Women in Science and  Engineering Programs and the Honors Engineering Learning Community.
