Daniel V. A. Olson is an associate professor of sociology at Purdue University. He is the past-president of the Religious Research Association and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion and Sociology of Religion. He is co-editor with Detlef Pollack of The Role of Religion in Modern Societies (Routledge, 2007) and co-editor with William Swatos of The Secularization Debate (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2000). His recent publications focus on factors that affect the commitment levels of religious group members, and the ways that the religious composition of geographic areas does and does not affect the religious behavior of individuals and religious organizations in those same areas.
