Omar Sosa’s music knows no boundaries. One of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today, Sosa fuses a wide range of world music and electronic elements with his native Cuban roots and experiences in Afro-Ecuadorian culture to create a fresh urban sound. A prodigious percussionist who took to the marimba from the age of eight, Sosa honed his piano skills at Havana’s prestigious Escuela Nacional de Música and has performed around the world, adding diverse musical elements—including Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Latin dance grooves, North African trance music, and European folk—into his own joyful mix. Touring in support of his latest album, Afreecanos, Sosa joins up with musicians from Cuba, Mozambique, and Senegal to celebrate the rich legacy of African and Latin music in jazz and to showcase the innovative interpretations that move it all forward into a contemporary jazz expression.
“Omar Sosa is a fusion artist in the best sense of the word. The virtuosic pianist mixes his Cuban roots with tastes of bebop, free jazz, even hip-hop and electronica, into a strikingly fresh and spicy modern stew." –Billboard
