An American citizen is detained, interrogated, and tortured in a secret prison. Meanwhile the American public stays glued to the tube, obsessed with who will get booted off and who will win their favorite reality shows. This hybrid theatre and dance work—based on a true incident when one of the dancer’s family members was detained—reflects America’s obsession with reality television, and uses a remote control as a theatrical device. The company flips from reality (too hard to watch) to reality show (so much more fun) as they offer up savage parodies of such shows as American Idol, Fear Factor, and America’s Next Top Model.
Jane Comfort and Company creates dance works that confront and challenge viewers’ ideas about social and cultural issues, producing deeply layered works that incorporate acting, spoken word, singing, and video projections with pure dance. An American Rendition features video design by artist Steve Miller, and composer Joan La Barbara contributes a score sung live by the performers. With a ruthless mix of humor and tragedy, this gripping dance theater program is alternately hard to watch and hard to ignore. This performance contains strong language and themes.
