Somewhere between a chamber ensemble and a rock band, there's Bang on a Can All-Stars, a groundbreaking group generating an innovative brand of music that’s as intense and intoxicating as it is unconventional—a boisterous blend of clarinet, cello, keyboard, electric bass, and drums. Working closely with some of the most important figures in contemporary music, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, Brian Eno, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, and DJ Spooky, the All-Stars perform and record definitive versions of today’s cutting-edge music, approaching it with energy, authority, and abandon. For this performance, the All-Stars will be joined by Glenn Kotche, from the Grammy Award–winning indie rock band Wilco. Kotche is an acclaimed percussionist noted for his creative use of rhythm and space in eclectic performances and original compositions—two of which ("Snap" and "Mobile")—are featured on the program. Kotche also developed a new arrangement of Steve Reich’s classic phase-shifting work Clapping Music that will share the program with Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood. The All-Stars will also perform works by renegade composers Louis Andriessen, and Lukas Ligeti, along with their tribute to Brian Eno’s landmark atmospheric composition Ambient 1: Music for Airports "1/1."
