After captivating Purdue audiences two years ago, when he performed as part of the wildly popular band Nickel Creek, mandolin-phenom Chris Thile is back, this time with a new lineup of bluegrass jammers called Punch Brothers. These young and blazingly talented musicians—including Gabe Witcher (fiddle), Chris Eldridge (guitar), Noam Pikelny (banjo), and Greg Garrison (bass)—are turning heads with their distinct brand of progressive folk music. Their impressionistic style is rooted in bluegrass but inspired by modern chamber music and jazz improvisation as well as 1960s folk and pop. Within a year of forming the band, they were already playing to sold-out crowds across the U.S. and touring in support of their second recording project Punch, their debut on the Nonesuch label. Hold on to your hats; this is not your father’s bluegrass. With Punch Brothers, it’s bluegrass and so much more.
“The music is refreshingly original…an organic statement that not only starts a fresh branch on the newgrass tree, but on new music, period.”
