Seducing audiences worldwide with her breathtaking voice, charismatic stage presence, and powerful blend of traditional fado (FAH-doh) and contemporary music forms, Mariza has established herself as the new face of Portuguese fado. Like American blues, traditional fado features sultry, sorrowful songs mourning lost love or working-class struggles. Supported by an emotive acoustic ensemble, Mariza transforms the deep, poetic laments into works of sublime expression that have rightfully regained international recognition for fado. These evocative tunes have now moved from Lisbon street corners and taverns into European concert halls. After her first album went multi-platinum in Portugal in 2001, Mariza ascended to superstar status on the world music scene. She has received the First Award for Most Outstanding Performance at the Quebec Summer Festival, was named Best European World Music Artist by BBC Radio 3, and is now making waves in the U.S. with her heartfelt, poetic performances.
