The NEA National Heritage Fellowship program, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, is presented with support from the Darden Restaurants Foundation.
In 1982, the National Endowment for the Arts established the National Heritage Awards to honor American folk artists whose diverse cultural traditions have transcended their beginnings to become part of our national character. Since then, more than 300 folk and traditional artists—including Kevin Locke and Mary Louise Defender Wilson—have received the Heritage Award and are considered National Living Treasures. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the fellowship program, Locke and Defender Wilson share fascinating traditions and customs from their respective Native American cultures. A visionary hoop dancer and preeminent player of the indigenous Northern Plains flute, storyteller Kevin Locke mesmerizes audiences with his fluid dancing and inspirational stories from the Lakota Sioux as he strives to raise awareness of “the oneness we all share as human beings.” Mary Louise Defender Wilson beautifully relates traditional stories from her Dakotah-Hidatsa heritage.
