In 2007, Garry Clarke, a former violinist with the Academy of Ancient Music, filled a void in Chicago’s cultural scene by establishing the city’s first and only period-instrument orchestra. In the short time since its debut performance, the Baroque Band has become known for its high artistic standards and compelling programs, and has already joined the city’s elite circle of musical organizations. For this performance, Australian countertenor David Hansen, a rising star in international opera, will be featured in a program entitled, “The Sky’s the Limit,” which commemorates the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death with arias and sinfonia from oratorios and operas including The Choice of Hercules, Alexander Balus, Saul, and Solomon. The Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom, with its resonant acoustics, will serve as an ideal location for this tour de force of vocal and opera counterpoint, and since in Handel’s time, music making was always a grand occasion, beverage service will complete the setting. General admission seating.

“This group has all the right stuff…an abundance of style, a crisp esprit de corps, and a palpable affection for its repertoire.”
