Information technology focuses on computing infrastructure and the needs of individual users. The discipline tends to involve a study of systems (perhaps just software systems, but perhaps also systems in support of learning, of information dissemination, etc.).
At Purdue, you will gain skills that can help solve problems in a variety of industries, such as business, manufacturing, law enforcement or healthcare. Learn how to plan, analyze, design, build, maintain and manage projects. Professors and projects will expose you to software development, systems integration, data management and computer networks.
Prepares visually oriented students for careers in creating and managing the production of computer graphics within a wide range of industries. Students work collaboratively in computer labs to master graphic techniques and concepts, and management skills.
Computer Science prepares students for the design and development of large-scale software systems with an understanding of the theoretical principles underlying computing.
Typical careers include software engineering, cyber security, data mining, machine intelligence, high-performance computing, embedded systems, and computer visualization.
The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree program in computer engineering, where students learn both the theoretical principles and practical techniques of how to design and build hardware and software systems. Computer engineering careers span the design and implementation of the hardware and software in embedded systems, mobile devices, desktops and servers as well as with companies whose products are not primarily computing products, but use computers and software as components.
Computer courses and project activities focus on the analysis, performance evaluation, development, and implementation of computer systems into real world applications. Students and graduates can apply their knowledge in a variety of fields, including automotive, biomedical, communication, entertainment, and smart-energy/green energy. They learn to work with microcontrollers, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), Digital Signal Processors (DSP), embedded Systems-On-a-Chip (SOC), embedded workstations, and distributed computing platforms and more.
Graduates are well prepared for careers as design engineers, application engineers, embedded hardware/software engineers, test engineers, field engineers, system engineers and are skilled in installation, operation, and/or maintenance of computer systems.
