Tom is Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University, where he teaches and conducts research on the economy-wide impacts of trade and environmental policies. He is a Fellow of the AAEA and he is also the founder and Executive Director of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) which now encompasses 6,500 researchers in 140 countries around the world (www.gtap.org). Tom’s most recent research has focused on the impacts of energy and climate policies on global land use. This has been the subject of a long term project with the US-Environmental Protection Agency, culminating in a book on climate policy and global land use. In addition, he has conducted extensive research on the linkages between global trade policies and poverty in developing countries. During the 2004/5 year he was on sabbatical leave with the Trade Research Group of the World Bank, where completed a book on the poverty impacts of a WTO agreement. This work has been featured in The Financial Times of London and The Economist magazine, among other places. Over the course of his career, Tom has won numerous professional awards from the American Agricultural Economics Association, including: Quality of Communication (2007), Distinguished Policy Contribution (1999), Advisor to the Outstanding PhD Dissertation (1989) and Outstanding Journal Article (1989). He was named Outstanding Researcher in the Purdue School of Agriculture in 1995.
