Dev’s research focus is on addressing two broad, inter-related questions: 1) How do humans affect short and long term weather and climate patterns? and 2) How can the predictability of the short and long term weather patterns be used for making societal decisions? The tools and concepts used for studying these questions build on the recent advances in remote sensing and in situ instrumentation and observations; computing infrastructure; and the molecular and biogeochemistry related discoveries from leaf and microbial scales to continental scale deforestation and land use stresses on weather and climate. The second thrust of Dev’s research interest is on Climate Informatics. This is an emerging discipline that applies dynamical-statistical modeling and decision theory to combine climate predication information, economics, and knowledge in the disciplines relevant to climate-sensitive economic sectors. This information will facilitate the formulation of optional decisions and best policy for adaptation to, and exploitation of, the projected climate conditions and their uncertainties.
