Datacenter Virtualization Pilot
In February of 2010, a project team was formed and charged with determining the true value of server virtualization within Purdue University's datacenter environment. The focus of this project was the potential energy savings achievable through virtualization of datacenters, both large and small.
Work started with the participation of four areas in a pilot of the datacenter virtualization project:
College of Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Purdue Libraries, and IT Systems and Operations. The Executive Vice President and Treasurer's office provided $200,000 and ITaP provided an additional $50,000 in funding for the pilot to be divided among the datacenter sites as needed. The individual areas also contributed funding for the project as necessary to meet each area's hardware and software needs. From the work on these four pilot areas the team concluded the project was of significant value. The project was continued beyond the pilot phase as a result.
