Manufacturing Engineering Technology

The Manufacturing Engineering Technology program is designed for students who seek to contribute at the interface between manufacturing, electrical, mechanical, and computing areas in primarily industrial environments. The program includes three majors that emphasize differing aspects of this critical field:

• Automation and systems integration engineering technology (ASET) majors address what is needed to move product concepts into efficient, automated production.

• Mechatronics engineering technology (MHET) majors dwell closer to development of the electromechanical products that are ubiquitous in modern life, dealing with interconnections that allow electronic control of mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

• Robotics engineering technology (ROET) majors develop and apply robotic solutions to a broad range of industrial and consumer problems..

Applied research drives the design and content of undergraduate courses. Focus areas of excellence include energy systems, advanced manufacturing systems and controls, engineered materials, applied nanotechnology systems and mechanical/electronic (mechatronic) systems. The educational objectives of the manufacturing engineering technology degree program are to produce graduates who:

• Deliver services and support to both internal and external clients by applying technical knowledge, problem solving techniques and hands-on skills in traditional and emerging areas of the manufacturing discipline.

• Are active participants in ongoing professional development, professional growth and increasing professional responsibility.

• Effectively communicate ideas with technical and non-technical people.

• Work effectively in teams.

• Work within the accepted standards of professional integrity and conduct.

Students often transfer into MFET from other programs at Purdue and other institutions. Graduates are in great demand by such firms as Rockwell Automation, Phoenix Contact, Caterpillar, Toyota, American Axle Manufacturing, Cessna Aircraft, Cummins, General Electric, Johnson Controls, Caterpillar, Motorola, TRW Automotive, U.S. Steel, Honda, Wabash National and other companies.

The B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs in West Lafayette, Kokomo, New Albany and South Bend are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
