Maximize Use of SharePoint with Tips from GoldAnswers - 04/8/10

Users of SharePoint can make the most of its benefits by visiting ITaP’s GoldAnswers — an online global knowledge base with Purdue-specific information.

SharePoint is a Web-based collaboration platform from Microsoft that ITaP says has become one of its fastest-growing services at Purdue.

“SharePoint offers versatile options for efficient, collaborative work on or off Purdue’s campus,” said Dwight Snethen, ITaP’s director of customer service and quality assurance. “GoldAnswers tips can get you started as an introduction to all that SharePoint has to offer.”

SharePoint operates much like a public-facing Web site, with content controlled by the site owner. Content can be made available only to those with Purdue career accounts added as users to the SharePoint site’s group (such as a collection of users within a specific Purdue department), or it can be offered to non-authenticated audiences (such as researchers with whom Purdue faculty are collaborating).

Among the many useful tools in SharePoint are: management, versioning and workflow chains for documents; functions to create and manage wikis, generate and update blogs, post announcements and initiate discussions; and personalization of the SharePoint experience using the My Sites platform.

Members of the Purdue community can search for information and tips about SharePoint and thousands of other topics by logging into GoldAnswers with their Purdue career account alias and password. After logging in, enter “SharePoint” into the box in the center of the page and click “Find Answers.”
