Subject: Required Training - Data Handling & Security Refresher

I want to thank everyone for the continued efforts and emphasis that you have placed on data handling and security. October is National Cyber Security Awareness month. To promote better awareness of security at Purdue the following items are now available. Please take some time over the next couple of weeks to review the refresher training. Completion of this training is required for all staff including students and temporary staff. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that staff complete this training. If some staff members in your area do not receive this e-mail, please forward this to them.

If you have questions about the material outlined below, send an e-mail to bssecurity@lists.purdue.edu.

Data Handling and Security Refresher Training - REQUIRED

Over the course of the last year there have been some changes to data handling. In addition, there were some additional exceptions added to the Indiana SSN law. Security tips and reminders were also added.

ITNS Security Awareness Events

IT Networks and Security is offering several informational sessions during the month of October on various cybersecurity topics. "The Internet: Your Ticket to Ride" sessions start October 10th. You can enroll on-line.

Security Flyer

The Business Services security flyer has been updated to include changes covered in the Refresher Training and it incorporates a checklist to identify areas in which you may want to learn more about data security. A printed version of this flyer will be coming to you in campus mail shortly. Please keep it at your desk for quick reference. A copy of this is also available on the web.

Printout of Data Handling Material

The Data Handling and Security training that is required for all new staff was also recently updated to include the above changes. New staff (including temporary and student staff) must take the WebCT course within the first month of employment. To enroll them, contact your training coordinator. If you wish, you can print out the material or view a pdf version of the material at: http://www.purdue.edu/business/Security/pdf/printoutwebctmaterial.pdf . If you have already taken this training, it is not necessary for you to retake it. You only need to take the Data Handling and Security Refresher training mentioned at the top of this email.

Sincerely,

James S. Almond
