Re: Gasoline Shortage

During this fiscal year we are guaranteed a supply of gasoline equal to the quantity used for fiscal year 1972-73, yet already our consumption rate is nearly 20 percent ahead of last year's usage. Restraints must be applied immediately in order to assure the availability of gasoline throughout the year for essential University driving requirements.

The Governor of the State of Indiana has ordered that all State-owned vehicles be driven at speeds no greater than 50 miles Per hour. Effective immediately, drivers of Purdue University vehicles should comply with this order. Although this measure should help conserve gasoline, other measures will be necessary to reduce consumption:

  1. All departments are urged to establish travel priorities, eliminating non-essential trips and postponing others.

  2. Travelers are requested to combine trips with other University personnel whenever possible. For assistance in combining trips to the same destination, call Transportation Service before submitting a Travel Request.

  3. All travel in University vehicles must be by the most direct route, and no excess mileage for reasons of preference or personal convenience will be permitted.

  4. All trucks and other vehicles provided for regular departmental use should be driven sparingly in order to effect substantial reduction from total miles recorded last year.

If these measures do not significantly reduce consumption, more stringent measures will need to be adopted.
