Program Introduction
BIOMEDSHIP is a focused educational program at Purdue University
that provides formal training in innovation and entrepreneurship
in the context of biomedical technology and the medical device industry
. Our mission is to develop leaders in biomedical technology
innovation and management. It is a unique course series designed to
provide students with the skills essential for the early development
and management of new biomedical technologies. The program targets graduate students in engineering and MBA students. It enhances
students’ abilities to identify new opportunities for innovation,
assess clinical and market potential, and take the critical first steps
in invention, patenting, early prototyping, development of new concepts,
and movement toward commercialization. Students who successfully complete
the elective sequence receive a certificate of completion in addition
to course credit.
The BIOMEDSHIP Initiative involves a partnership between Purdue’s
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue’s
Krannert School of Management, and the Indiana
University School of Medicine. Other critical stakeholders in this
program will be medical technology companies, venture capitalists, and
the State of Indiana.
