March 4 - DR. joseph kappock
The “Soil Bugs Experiment Kits” were distributed to biochemistry students and club members by Dr. Kappock on our March 4 th meeting. Each student received tubes and materials to collect two samples from biodiverse areas they encounter while on Spring Break. The location of each area will be incorporated into a distribution map, and photos will be used to provide visuals. This experiment will also provide further opportunity for participants to transform the colonies and use molecular techniques like PCR and genetic analysis to identify the types of bacteria (not to mention the extensive data analysis). This project is a unique way for our undergraduate students to experience and be part of fundamental scientific research.
Dr. Joe Kappock explains how to use the kits to collect soil samples.
