Purdue jazz bands hit a 'blue note' to honor recording label

Hitting a “blue note” won’t be hard for Purdue’s four jazz bands as they celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Blue Note jazz record label by performing some of its biggest hits in an 8 p.m. “Blue Note Special” concert set for Friday, Nov. 20, in Loeb Playhouse of the Purdue Stewart Center. Admission is free.

“Blue Note is the chronicler of what we think of as modern jazz,” says M.T. “Mo” Trout who directs the Purdue Jazz Band, American Music Repertory Ensemble, Lab Jazz Band and Concert Jazz Band for the celebratory event.

Purdue Bands & PMO pull heartstrings with Aaron Copland works

The uncanny ability of composer Aaron Copland to pull America’s heartstrings will be showcased in a concert that features the Purdue Symphonic Band, the Purdue Glee Club and the Purduettes in a variety of Copland works on Sunday, Nov. 22.

It is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Long Center, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette. Admission is free.

“Aaron Copland speaks to our hearts in a way few American composers ever have and ever will,” says Jay S. Gephart, who directs the Symphonic Band. “From a classical standpoint, he’s the composer I consider to be a truly American composer because his music embodies the character of our nation.”

Purdue Band flamingos available in limited edition

Band flamingos can be picked up before Christmas; if you need them shipped an additional charge for postage and handling will be assessed.

Another idea for Christmas giving is the 2010 Purdue “All-American” Marching Band Calendar. Order it through the Merchandise section of our web site.
