![]() Percussion
Percussion doesn’t just serve as the heartbeat of the “All-American” Marching Band at Purdue, it flavors every ensemble in the department. Besides the “All-American” Band Drum Line, percussionists can also audition for placement within the symphony orchestra, concert bands and jazz bands and athletic bands. In addition to these opportunities, Purdue Bands offers ensembles specifically for percussion players. Each spring the Purdue Percussion Theatre presents a concert that incorporates theatrical effects with performances by the Percussion Ensemble and the Winter Drum Line. Dr. Pamela J. Nave heads the Percussion Ensemble, which performs a large variety of selected ensemble pieces from Johann Sebastian Bach to Nigel Westlake. The size of the ensemble varies, depending on the performance venue. The Purdue Percussion Ensemble performs at Percussive Arts Society’s Indiana Day of Percussion as well as its annual spring concert. It also travels to perform at high schools and junior highs across Indiana. Members of the group frequently perform specialty numbers with other ensembles in the department. Auditions are required for participation. Percussionists participating in marching band, concert bands, jazz bands and orchestra receive two hours of credit per semester.
