Purdue Summer Band performs
outdoors July 17

A John Philip Sousa style concert in the park will be presented by Purdue’s Summer Band, led by Director of Purdue Bands Jay Gephart and Prof. Ishbah Cox, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday July 17, at Slayter Center. Admission is free.

Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating on Slayter’s grassy slopes. Picnics are encouraged. Pets on leashes are permitted.

The Lafayette Indiana Historic Automobile Club will host a display of vintage cars in conjunction with the concert. Spokesman Eldon Fredericks says there will be 15 to 20 cars from various eras, ranging from the 1920s to the 1970s. “You never know what will show up. It’s kind of eclectic,” he says. The cars will be parked in an area southwest of the stage by 7 p.m. and will remain on view during the event.

By tradition, the Purdue Summer Band is open to Purdue students, high school students, university faculty and staff and area musicians. Musicians rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a month prior to the concert.

The event is sponsored by Purdue Bands & Orchestras.
