2012 AUDITION
Note that the audition etudes themselves are password protected. Please contact your Purdue Band director, the main office or the webmaster for login information. Important notes for those interested in Marching Band at Purdue:
Marching Band (Openings for Piccolo, Clarinet, Alto and Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, Mellophone, Baritone, Trombone, Sousaphone, Snare Drum, Multi-Tenor, Bass Drum and Cymbals, Baton Twirlers, Dancers and Color Guard) Brass, Woodwinds and Drumline How do I enroll in Band? See your academic advisor to enroll in a band class AND go to the Purdue Band database to provide information we need for your participation. When are music auditions? • Returning brass and woodwinds audition March 26-April 9. • Incoming students and all percussion will audition during the first day of band camp (August 12, 2012). New members should stop by the band department during your required Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration program, also called STAR, in June/July to receive and fill out appropriate paperwork for marching band.
The entire week of band camp is part of the marching audition process. This year’s band camp begins on August 12, 2012. All students auditioning for marching band are required to attend band camp. What is the schedule for summer band camp and the fall marching season? Contact Becky Bercich rbercich@purdue.edu for Golden Silks information and registration Concert Bands / Orchestra Winds (Openings for Piccolo, Flute, all Clarinets, all Double Reeds, all Saxophones, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Piano and Harp) How do I enroll in Band? See your academic advisor to enroll in a band class AND go to the Purdue Band database to provide information we need for your participation. When are music auditions? • Returning members audition March 26-April 9 • Incoming students should schedule an audition during your required Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration program, also called STAR, in June/July. Auditions will take place between the hours of 1-5pm during STAR. • Individual auditions can be scheduled at other times with permission of professor. • Those missing one of these opportunities may audition during BGR week or during the first week of classes in the fall. Audition Music: You may select your own audition repertoire. The audition should consist of one prepared selection involving contrasting styles (2-3 minutes in length). This could be a solo, etude, or excerpts from orchestra or band music. Students will play alone without accompaniment. Please, prepare two scales of your choice (one at least two octaves). There will be brief sight-reading. *If you are incoming student and you don’t have access to your own audition music, you may certainly play the etude located on our website. Jazz Band and AMRE Auditions (Openings for Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet and Rhythm Section-Drum Set, Percussion, Guitar, Piano and Bass and a select number of vocalists) How do I enroll in Band? See your academic advisor to enroll in a band class AND go to the Purdue Band database to provide information we need for your participation. When are music auditions? • Returning members audition starting April 2nd. • Incoming freshmen and transfer students should schedule an audition during your required Summer Transition, Advising, and Registration program, also called STAR, in June/July. Auditions will take place between the hours of 1-5pm during STAR. Although not required, we encourage Jazz Students to select a Thursday or Friday STAR date if possible. • Audition appointments can also be made through Tuesday of Boiler Gold Rush(week prior to the start of classes in August). Individual auditions can be scheduled at other times with permission of professor. *PLEASE NOTE: Those wishing to be considered for one of the top jazz ensembles (Purdue Jazz Band and AMRE) should audition during the summer. Accompaniment recordings are provided to play with when auditioning. Everyone will also have to sight read, play 2 to 3 choruses of concert F or B flat blues and everyone except drums will have to play 2 scales of their choice. Vocalists will be asked to sing a song of your choice with a jazz feeling. Please provide an accompanist or a CD accompaniment recording. Please try to avoid bringing a recording with the vocal part included – we want to hear YOU sing. If you can’t bring either, please have piano music for an accompanist to sight read, but make arrangements with me beforehand so that I can have an accompanist available.. You may not sing without accompaniment. There may also be some sight reading – vocalists will audition on a provided microphone and through a small PA system.
