Purdue Golden Girl to
For the second time in three years, Purdue Golden Girl MerrieBeth Cox will compete in the World Twirling Championships. She qualified for the 2012 Worlds at the USA Championships held by the National Baton Twirling Association at Notre Dame University, July 18-22. At that event, thousands of twirlers competed for three spots representing the United States in Switzerland in April 2012.
During the week long national twirling championships, Cox won the preliminary solo competition, besting 89 of the nation’s best twirlers. From there she went on to place second in grand nationals which qualified her for the world team.
She also won the national three-baton competition and was presented with the Brooks’ “Going Diamond Award” for artistry and excellence. Earlier in the summer Cox, as Miss Purdue, won the talent award and the arts in action scholarship with her baton twirling routine at the Miss Indiana Pageant.
In 2010, Cox earned a bronze medal in the World Twirling Championships in Belgium. She is a senior Physical Education major from Roselle, IL, and will begin her fourth year as Golden Girl with the opening of the Boilermakers 2011 football season in September.
