Monday, August 17, 2009

Carolyn Frantz Gephart, wife of Director of Purdue Bands & Orchestras Jay Gephart, died in her sleep at 7:20 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, in Clarion Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. She had been battling breast cancer for several years.
“Carolyn fought this illness to the very end,” Jay says. “She was my hero. She was as courageous and selfless as anyone I have ever known.”
He says support received from alumni, students and fans of the band meant a lot as Carolyn’s condition worsened. “Our Purdue students, faculty and staff have played a major role in my ability to cope with Carolyn’s illness. I could never have done it without them and for that I am eternally grateful.”
The Gepharts recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. They have four children, Samantha, Molly, Will and Libby. A complete obituary with funeral arrangements will be posted on this site Wednesday. Soller Baker of Lafayette is in charge.
