Auditions for Purdue twirlers, dancers & flags held in AprilThursday, April 5, 2007
For the first time, auditions for the 2007-08 twirling team will be held on the same day. Two other Purdue “All-American” Marching Band auxiliary units – the Golduster Dancers and the Golden Silks flag corps – will hold auditions on April 28.
All four of Purdue’s four current solo twirlers, including Golden Girl Meghan LaMontagne from Pelham, NH, Girl in Black Tierney Brown from Bloomington and Silver Twins Megan and Morgan VonDielingen from Seymour, will be competing on April 14. By tradition, all solo twirlers must compete each year to repeat in their positions or obtain a different one.
The public is invited to watch the performance segment of the auditions which runs concurrently with Spring Fest activities on campus. It will begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, April 14, in Mackey Arena. Purdue Bands is expecting 15 twirlers, mainly from the Midwest, to compete for the solo spots and the twirling team.
“It tells me the word is out about Purdue and its twirling program,” says Auxiliaries Director Alisha Kuckartz who’s looking forward to seeing all the different twirling and choreography styles the women will bring to the competition.
Following the performance auditions, the women competing for the solo spots will have personal interviews with the judges in the afternoon. “All these women are talented in different ways and we need to choose the four best for all the aspects of the position. Besides talent, there’s presence on the field, showmanship and their ability to communicate,” says Kuckartz. “There are so many things to look at.” Purdue Bands Director Jay S. Gephart leads the team of judges and will announce the solo twirlers at 5 p.m. in Room 15 of Elliott Hall of Music. The public is invited to attend.
Auditions for the Golduster Dance Team and the Golden Silks will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility and continue throughout the day. Members of the 2007-08 teams will be announced at approximately 6 p.m.
