Band/Orchestra alumni organization to become
Alums encouraged to fill out on-line interest survey
After several years of hearing
from interested alumni, and exploring options available to the Purdue
Bands through the current university structure, we are pleased to announce
that plans are well underway to create a formal Purdue Bands and Orchestra
The concept behind this group
is different from the All-American Club. That organization has served
mainly as a fund-raising group, and has made no direct efforts to serve
the social needs of our alums. This new organization, patterned after
band alumni groups at other Big Ten institutions, will foster group
activities among other efforts.
It will have a slate of officers,
plan special events such as alumni reunions, receptions and the like.
But most of all, it will be a conduit between band and orchestra alums
and the department.
A committee of former band
and orchestra members has been meeting to discuss a basic outline for
such an organization, and discussions have gone on concerning affiliation
with the Purdue Alumni Association as well.
Members of the committee
were selected to provide representation across various band and orchestra
eras. They include Marshall Martin, Band Advisory Board Chair; Chad
Johnson, Outreach Director of the Purdue Alumni Association; Dr. David
Leppla, Department Head of University Bands; and band and orchestra
alums Don Daniel of West Lafayette, Roy Johnson of Lafayette, Lisa Ross
Todd of Kokomo and Katie Peter Mitchell and Lori Stark Buckland of Indianapolis.
Ultimately this new organization
needs to meet the needs of all band and orchestra alums. That’s
why the committee needs YOUR input!
At the bottom of this article
there’s a link to a brief survey, put together by the committee,
which you can complete and email back to us. The same survey also appears
in Fanfare, which you should receive this week. It is very important
to hear from you so we know what you’d like to see this association
Once the responses are tabulated,
we will expand our exploratory committee and get into the nuts and bolts
of putting the organization together, including writing a constitution,
bylaws, etc. When that process is done, we will bring the final draft
to you for comments.
A formal band alumni organization
has been a long time coming. We hope it is something that interests
you, and that it is something you will help us put together. Such a
group will make the entire department stronger and more responsive.
So what are you waiting for? Get to work on that survey today! We appreciate
your thoughts and ideas.
The deadline for the survey has passed, Thank you for your interest.
