Danielle Donovan of Dwight, IL., and Bob Shriner of Mishawaka, IN, were named drum majors of the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band and will lead the band during 2003-04.
Dr. David Leppla, Director of Bands, announced the decision following a long afternoon of tryouts on May 2. Twelve candidates vied for the two spots. It was the first time in several years that no returning drum majors were among the candidates.
Danielle Donovan and Bob Shriner will make their first appearance, along with Purdue’s new Golden Girl Christy Jayne Stallings, of Johnston City, IL, at the Purdue vs. Bowling Green football game on Sept. 6. That is also “All-American” Band Day.
Other key football weekends include Homecoming on Oct. 4, when the Alumni Homecoming Band joins the festivities, and the Band’s annual Big 10 trip which will be to the University of Michigan on Oct. 25 in 2003.
Drum majors serve both ceremonial and practical leadership roles with the band.
With their tall bear hats and their maces, they lead the way when the band enters
Ross-Ade Stadium and in parade appearances. They conduct all the tunes the band
plays in the Ross-Ade stands and plan songs and cheers to keep spirit at a fever
pitch in the stadium. Away from Ross-Ade, and during rehearsals, they continue
to play a vital leadership role by helping the directors with the myriad of
details involved in creating a new show for every home football game.
Fans are invited to watch the “All-American” Band’s practices which are held every weekday during the fall semester at the Band Practice Field across from Shreve Hall. Following tradition, the band marches away from Elliott Hall of Music at precisely 3:30 p.m. and returns there after practice, approximately 5:30 p.m.
