Dave Martin, who drove the marching band’s instruments to every bowl game in the Joe Tiller era, was killed in a two-car accident north of Middlebury late Thursday afternoon, April 25.
An 18-year-old driver, who was also killed, was attempting to pass on a hill when he hit Martin’s vehicle head on.
Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 29, at Bubb Funeral Home, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, IN. Bubb’s phone is (574) 255-3126. The service will also be there at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30.
Plans are already underway to create an Operations Scholarship in Martin’s honor at Purdue University Bands. Martin, a 1983 graduate, was active in Operations, also serving as its office head. Information will be available on the web sight as soon as arrangements are made.
Dave and his wife Deb, both Purdue Band alums, attended the Bands Department’s Spring Banquet at the Memorial Union on April 21. Martin, who planned to keep on moving the AAMB to bowl games, was playfully dubbed “Director of Bowl Transportation” by Dr. Leppla at the banquet. In the fall of 2001, Martin was presented the Alumni Achievement Award for his contributions to Purdue Bands.
